(১) (পরোক্ষ প্রশ্ন উপস্থাপনে ব্যবহৃত, যথার্থ শর্তাধীন উপবাক্য- (whether conditional clause নিয়ে বিভ্রান্তির সম্ভাবনা না- থাকলে কথ্যরীতিতে 'whether' এর স্থলে প্রায়ই 'if' ব্যবহৃত হয়): I don’t know whether /if he will be able to come back before eight.(লক্ষণীয়, or- সহযোগে দুটি পরোক্ষ প্রশ্ন থাকলে or -এর পরে whether পুনরাবৃত্ত হয়): I wonder whether he will present his own case or whether he will ask someone else to speak for him. (নিচে দেওয়া বাক্য দুটিতে whether ও if এর ব্যবহার তুলনীয়): Send me a note letting me know whether I am to come, অর্থাৎ আসতে হবে কি হবে না লিখে জানাবে; Send me a note if I am to come, অর্থাৎ আসতে হলে লিখে জানাবে, নচেৎ নয়।(২) (infinitive phrase উপস্থাপনে ব্যবহৃত) I don’t know whether to accept or refuse the invitation.(৩) (whether দ্বারা উপস্থাপিত clause ও infinitive phrase সমূহ প্রস্তুতিমূলক it-সহযোগে ব্যবহৃত হয়): It’s doubtful whether we shall be able to come. (এ জাতীয় clause ও phrase ক্ষেত্রবিশেষে subject অথবা complement হতে পারে): The question is whether to introduce market economy or to stick to the socialist path. Whether to take up writing as a profession was a question that worried me for a long time. (এ জাতীয় clause কখনো কখনো Preposition(al)-এর object হতে পারে): Everything depends on whether you are willing to take the risk.(whether দ্বারা উপস্থাপিত clause ক্ষেত্রবিশেষে noun-এর apposition হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হতে পারে): The question whether we ought to have a parliamentary system of government must be decided by the Parliament itself.whether or no (ক) এটা কিংবা ওটা কিনা।(খ) এটাই হোক আর ওটাই হোক, যাই হোক না কেন, যা-ই ঘটুক বা না ঘটুক, যেকোনো ক্ষেত্রে: You may rely upon my help, whether or no, অন্যরা সাহায্য করুক বা না করুক।whether or not (নেতিবাচক বিকল্পটিকে স্বীকার করে): whether or not it rains, we are going to hold a protest rally tomorrow; Tell me whether or not I should invite Kamal and his wife.
